Getting Back Behind The Wheel
Returning to driving after an accident or illness
Many people return to driving after an accident or illness without issues. However, after a more serious illness, it’s essential to consult your doctor first. They can advise whether you’re fit to drive immediately, if you need to stop driving temporarily, or if you need to notify the DVLA.
If there are concerns about your practical driving ability, you or your doctor can contact your local “Driving Mobility” assessment centre to arrange a practical driving assessment. This will evaluate your medical fitness to drive and your in-car driving skills. After the assessment, the assessors will provide a detailed debrief and recommendations for your next steps.
